If you happen to be in Shanghai now and like old photos, drop by the 'Shanghai Art Museum'. I saw photos of the Old Summer Palace (Beijing) which were illuminating since its just bare ruins now. There were also original old prints dealing with China from Harper's Weekly, Illustrated London (to name a few) dating back to 1800s are also on show as well as works from other artists....then do have afternoon tea afterward at Kathleen's 5 (same historic building) to savor the view over People's Square! (Or JW Marriot for stronger stuff).

  1. btw, no admission fee to the museum (I read it was CNY 20 before).

also, this is a historic building -> former clubhouse building of the Shanghai Race Track (1933)

  3. I went around kc sa People's Square for a long time...so nakita ko yung MoCA (Museum of Conteporary Art pero Pixar ang exhibit), City Hall (pangit ang labas hehe), Shanghai Grand Theater (sa labas lang kc walang performance), and Shanghai Museum (nakakatuwa ang pot-shape nya).

I lingered more sa Shanghai Art Museum coz I really like seeing photos of how old places and buildings looked like before. I bought a nifty book as souvenir instead of my usual tshirt and ref magnet - the book had photographs of places in Shanghai before and now...say yung Bund pag 1930s versus now etc. Its just amazing...

  6. btw Sir B...wala lang ako time pero I peeked on the other side of the road nila, may exhibit din pala ang Shanghai Grand Theater Gallery...may mga art pieces din don...

I didn't know beforehand na meron, I was just walking along Huangpi Road kc (on the western side ng Shanghai Art Museum). The gallery has a lot of exhibited Chinese art, from sculptures and oil on canvas to traditional Chinese paintings. Sorry, walang pics at bawal :-)

From the net I googled now - The gallery, which opened in 1999, is managed by Shanghai Grand Theater in a space of more than 1,000 square meters and it is considered to be one of the best exhibition venues in Shanghai. The modern and avant-garde displays are available for purchase and prices range from 10,000 to 800,000 yuan, mostly attracting middle to high-end buyers.

  9. cge post nyo po...?

btw, a funny slash embarassing thing happened to me...

so lakas loob, e pumunta na lang ako sa guard at nagtanong (simply pointing to the chinese characters)..natawa sa akin si manong....his expression naman was more of amusement and not amazement...sarado na daw....hehehe...

its only now I am back in the country, I found out ibang address na yata (pumunta kc ako sa Shanghai na walang complete prep for trips except for the very normal tourist spots).

ayun tuloy, na-discover ko yung banda sa river side ng Pudong e don na lang ako nagmokmok sa ulan at night (pero nice photos of the Bund side naman so oks na rin)

  10. Under the Tower in Pudong ang Old Shanghai exhibit. It is like going through narrow alleys in yesterday's Shanghai and you see these shops, restos, bars, homes people by real-looking wax figures. May whore house pa yata.

  11. wow, that would be something nice to see esp if parang lifelike ang figures tapos authentic ang dating sa exhibit...

sadly, ung Pudong ko is more of xiao long bao, Jin Mao and other building night shots..plus nasira 30 minutes ko looking for the Sex Exhibit don daw sa Northern end near the Bund Tunnel..hayz...sayang oras...

  12. ako rin...I got a book from the Shanghai Museum na then and now...photos na side by side of the then and now :-)

yun lang ang aking souvenir, di na ako bumili ng mga magnet or even tshirt kc inuna ko books and stuff from the museum....

for the exhibit, I really mourned that pictures were forbidden...

mismo nga parang cartoons and sketches by artists of China and its issues na publish sa Harper's Weekly back sa mga 1800's something were very interesting, even if di ko mabasa write-up in Chinese..

then the Old Imperial Palace in Beijing na photos...*sobs* I really felt so sad that it was wrecked by those soldiers...ang ganda ang intricate ng details..and these photos pa nga were not even those where di pa sya touched sa war...

even after the rampage nila, makikita mo pa ang mga gandang columns and buildings...argh!

  13. ah...one more thing, di lang nga permanent exhibits yata sa Shanghai Art Museum Tochie..so no idea if it will be another exhibit by the time you revisit Shanghai..
