ReplyDeleteAn exquisite Japanese cinematic masterpiece at all levels—visual, aural, emotional, spiritual, awaits Eiga Sai fanatics this July featuring Departures, winner of the 81st Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.
The Eiga Sai opens on July 1 (Friday) at the Shang Cineplex Cinema 2, Shangri-La Plaza, EDSA, Mandaluyong City as a kick-off event of the month-long festivity.
Departures takes a bizarre and unique subject with heartwarming scenes and outstanding acting performances by Masahiro Motoki, who played the role of Daigo Kobayashi, an aspiring cellist who eventually takes the job of an encoffinner, sending the deceased body off to final departure with dignity. He won the coveted Best Actor awards (32nd Japan Academy Prize in 2008 and Kinema Junpo Awards in 2009) for his role in the film complimenting the brilliant mind of its acclaimed director Yojiro Takita.
The film festival officially reels off with an invitational screening and special performance of Mr. Renato Lucas, the principal cellist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra together with pianist—Ms. Naomi Sison, at 7:00 P.M. at the Atrium Plaza, Shangri-la Plaza.

I saw this on a plane, loved this movie, an intelligent, creative & very touching movie.
Oh i looked for Tampopo in Singapore (HMV), it was not available...apparently censored in the territory.
hi Doc Philip...
ReplyDeleteAm sorry, I have not seen that, though it sounds very touching and romantic :-)
I have only seen those mostly sa Eiga Sai dito sa atin, most animation movies from Japan and those from director Akira Kurosawa-sama's genius...
Ay, sayng naman...but you may be able to see on the internet yung Tampopo (no idea where though)...maghanap nalang sa HK :-)
Siguro yung version nila is yung may scene sa itlog (raw chicken eggs...don't ask..hahaha..personally I don't know why they would label it as porn, when there are so many others which could fit in that category).
Tampopo is really a nice story - of leadership and change, believe it or not :-)
if I can find a copy, I will burn one cd/dvd for you...
ReplyDeleteCool! thanks! i've been pestering my son who does burn DVD's from the net as almost a lifestyle, to look for it...but unfortunately am not a priority :(
ReplyDeletei will look for it HK.
1778 is a must see...it was filmed only January this year. on SQ, the 1st thing i look for are Foreign films, Japanese movies in particular...it should be out on DVD.
for recent ones, I want to see this -
ReplyDeletePrincess Toyotomi

ReplyDelete"Goemon" an action, CGI, anime
Ishikawa Goemon (石川 五右衛門?, ? - October 8, 1594) was a semi-legendary Japanese bandit hero who stole gold and valuables and gave them to the poor.[1] Goemon is notable for being boiled alive along with his son in public after a failed assassination attempt on the civil war-era warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A large iron kettle-shaped bathtub is now called a goemonburo ("Goemon bath").[2][3] His legend continues to live on, often with greatly exaggerated ninja skills, in contemporary Japanese popular culture.
the Movie:
Goemon is a 2009 Japanese historical fantasy film written and directed by Kazuaki Kiriya. It is loosely based on the story of Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary outlaw hero who stole valuables from the rich and gave them to the poor. The film is a fictional account of Goemon's exploits and his role during the final phase of Japanese civil war, especially the conflict leading to its decisive Battle of Sekigahara. With the use of over 2,500 visual effects, the director of Casshern mixes action with Japanese history and folklore into a film evocative of the classic Robin Hood-style tale. Goemon was released on DVD and Blu-ray by FUNimation Entertainment on April 19, 2011.*

Doc Philip, thats the problem talaga pag weekend ka pupunta...
ReplyDeletehence due to my previous forays into Eiga Sai during weekends (and I didn't have companions because the group i used to go to before have left HP na or are outside na sa Pinas)...it was difficult to stand in line for hours..and wait and hope to get a ticket..
