MANILA, Philippines--The Manila's Best Kept Restaurant Secrets (MBKRS) awards, inspired by the best-selling book of the same title, recognizes this year's most excellent chefs and best dining spots in the metro.

The winners were announced last November 24 in an awarding ceremony at the Enderun Colleges' Culinary Center in Taguig City.

This year's list was a combination of old favorites and newcomers--from world-renowned fine dining restaurant Antonio's in Tagaytay and the rustic Galileo Enoteca in Mandaluyong to the newly opened L'Incontro Ristorante Italiano in Makati City.

People's Palace in Makati City was, indeed, Manila's favorite culinary destination as it bagged the People's Choice distinction in this year's MBKRS awards.

Chef-owner Antonio Escalante (of Antonio's) received the Best Chef award while Margarita Fores (of Cibo and Lusso) was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sunshine and Rob Pengson were recognized as MBKRS awards' Best Emerging Talent this year for their restaurant, The Goose Station, which won this year's Newcomer restaurant award.

  1. Have you been to any of these restaurants? How did MBKRS come up with the awards? Besides the food, did they also take into account the service, ambience, location? It'd be interesting to check out these restaurants to find out if they deserve the awards.

  11. A halo-halo is a halo-halo di ba? Same ingredients. How can one be better than the others?

But I remember one place I had halo-halo that really stood out. And of all places, it was the halo-halo sa Central Market nung nasa UP pa ako in the 60s. Up until today, it's still the best halo-halo I've ever tasted.

Did you know that when it snows here I make myself a "halo-halo ala Canada." In it are diced fruits such as apple, pear, peach, thinly sliced chiquita bananas, and whatever fruit is available. Canadian maple syrup is the sweetener and a dash of milk. And of course, topped with fresh snow. Yummy!

In it are diced fruits such as apple, pear, peach, thinly sliced chiquita bananas, whole seedless grapes, and whatever fruit is available. Canadian maple syrup is the sweetener and some cream. And of course, fresh snow topped with blueberry jam. Yummy!

  13. ah no...i thought so before that a halo-halo is more or less the same...
but take Razon's (Pampanga yata orig) for instance..parang 3 lang ingredients nya..and I don;t think kasama pa don yung mga nata etc.

but its super delicious...ibang-iba sa halo-halo na maraming ingredients like ube jalea, leche flan, nata de coco, crispies etc.

Ms. G did say that yung Razon's yata parang nagaaway between the family so ayon..split...I've only tasted yung dito sa GB1 before..ay sarap....simple and delish...mapuntahan nga rin next year to see ano ba talaga ang loob non...

..coz parang leche flan, macapuno and condensed milk lang ata.......but check ko later *grin* kc baka may saba yon...

  14. am sure snow dyan sa Canada ay malinis-linis pa hahaha...perfect for the fresh fruit halo-halo you've just described!
I've never tried maple syrup sa halo-halo..papagawa ako sa you if ever mapunta ako Canada tapos snowy season at magkikita tayo *puppy dog eyes*
