Since I haven't had luck with Panasonic's LX5, a friend suddenly tempted me with a GPS as a Christmas gift to myself :-) *thinks it over a million times*

  1. what is a gps? lx5 pa rin... i compared it with a s95 and nex5. lx5 pa rin ako! meantime, i need to save up for an lx5.

  2. ahehehe..yung global positioning system..

its not a cam...I should have clarified saying its yung GPS navigation na device..

you see it in cars sa US to help them get from one place to another :-)

eh, ang problem is, may stock ba ng LX-5?

may LX-5 sa Japan, kaya nga lang, hinapon...

    ReplyDelete
  3. i found one in Greenhills for 25K...its down to $420 from $499 in Amazon...that should be around the same price you will find in Sing & HK

    ReplyDelete
  4. eh? bumili na kayo Doc?

ok naman sya? parang gusto ko nang pumunta Greenhills ora mismo :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. err, i have no idea what both are... *scratches head, sighing at her own ignorance*

  6. hi Chiarz...

the Panasonic LX-5 is a camera, na di DSLR pero maganda ang kuha..in fact its predecessor, the LX-3 is sometimes usually the preferred backup cam of prof photographers.

the GPS you are familiar with, if mahilig ka movies or US shows..hehehe.

its the device they put in cars which helps them navigate the roads....I've seen it before sa tv shows, but it was in my visit to the US na nakita ko how common it was for folks to have it sa kotse nila..kc may map sya sya shown on screen w/ landmarks, buildings etc., tapos it will say (for example if gusto mo punta sa isang street) = "Turn right after 10 meters,"...."drive straight for 20 meters" mga ganon na directions

  7. the store i think is Digital Walker...check online for other branches & stock.
no haven't gotten one, will most likely buy it either in Sing or Hk, mas mura pa kasi than the 25K...maybe between 18-22K

    ReplyDelete
  8. i think they had it in White & Black colors

    Digital Walker...Greenbelt 5 (63 2) 757-0242
    Market Market (63 2) 856-1455

i hope i'm right i did see it here, in INFOMAX it costs 35K!!!

    ReplyDelete

  10. Hi Cat. I own an LX5. If you have time to check out my site, look over my LX5 Adventures series. Am very happy with it. Upgraded from LX2 then LX3 and now the LX5 (with accessories). May nagsabi sa akin, sa Quiapo it sells for P22K n lang. Iwas ka sa Infomax: sobra ang taga!

  11. hi Robbie!

convinced na talaga ako sa LX-5 kaso nga lang ano ba yan..wala dito sa Makati yung mga tinanungan ko but....
try ko yung Digital Walker sabi ni Doc Phil bukas *rubs hands gleefully*

if wala, hay...maghahanap ako sinong sasama sa akin sa Quiapo (am sorry, am really a Cebuana transplanted to Makati so medyo lost in Quiapo ang labas ko)

nakakunot noo ako sa Japan..may LX-5 pero Japanese model...ok lang sana if sa manual, e pati language di mo ma set to English :-)
so near yet so far *hanggang hipo na lang ako sa camera*

    ReplyDelete
  12. salamat sa enlightenment Cat, i therefore conclude you get that camera instead of the annoying gps. he he he. =D

    ReplyDelete
  13. Php 28,400 sa Digital Walker Greenbelt :-(

    Php 25000 if cash...

    but...hmm..1 month warranty lang? ngeh...

    ReplyDelete
  14. hahaha...tama..pero mas mahal....
actually the GPS was more of being useful if one goes on trips...pero baka nga later...may cheaper unbranded ones naman kc and I guess I was enchanted w/ the experience shared by a friend when he went to Tuguegarao w/ his wife :-) a big help daw...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I didn't know GPS is already being used here in the Philippines. Sa akin kasi there are two things that need to be done para maging effective ang GPS sa atin, i.e. a) digital maps of all provinces and cities, and b) a rational/sensible system of road and street signs. I am not aware that we have both, especially the latter. My impression is that for now it is more of a status symbol or a high-priced toy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. hi Chito,

same din ang impression ko...I was pleasantly surprised to find out even sa Tuguegarao such a thing was useful - honestly, I was in a "huh?" mood when it came to thinking about places being on GPS tapos here in our country pa.

actually I saw an officemate use a GPS in her car earlier this year, and was unable to question her further but it seemed she not only used it in Manila but for her road trips outside of the capital.

that was my first inkling the system is improving and not too far off.

then when I chatted w/ my friend yesterday (actually nasa office sya ng client namin), I saw a ray of hope coz I asked him about the cost, the software updates (like OS) at saka yung maps na ilo-load..

may up to date and updates yung group he plans to join nga - kc the maps loaded into the system need to be updated as more buildings/streets/etc. roll in as time goes by.

and if not just for Philippines, its a blessing I think to have such a gadget when one travels (I could have used this in Japan and be high-tech instead of my compass and maps hehehe)

    ReplyDelete
  17. hello Chito..yes GPS system works here and you can download the maps online(it's free at www.waypoints.ph)...it is accurate & updated...and as you use the GPS, it automatically updates the roads & routes you take...i got mine for my son who has no clue in directions, from US via Amazon, it is way cheaper $99. locally it goes for double the price though may not be same unit, it does the same job just as well...the side streets and even road map to provinces are there too.

    ReplyDelete
  18. oh, dito pala sa Pinas, if you check sulit.com, may Php 4,500 lang..pero of course its not branded...but its such a useful gadget din even for those who are not direction-challenged :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi drphilipdc. Thanks for the info. I've been using an old worn-out book-type map for my trips. The problem with that is that old as it is, it is also not updated. Thanks again. I'll check-out that online site with free downloadable maps.

    ReplyDelete
  20. question pala po, ano pong nangyari sa Lx2 and tsaka 3 ninyo?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nice to know that GPS is available in the Philippines. It'll be useful when I go there to get around. The most popular GPS brands here are Garmin Nuvi, Tom Tom, and Magellan. Under each brand are several models with varying price ranges depending on features. I have a Garmin Nuvi, and it's good for both Canada and the US. It also has a slot for an additonal memory card, like a road map of the Philippines. I'll see if I can download the Philippines from the site given by drphilipdc -. thanks. By the way, the GPS will not only give you directions but also location of places of interest like hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, groceries, gas stations, bus stations, etc around the area you're currently in. Price range here is from $120 - $250.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ay...so remiss of me...may reduction pala talaga sa price ng LX-5...

last Sept 3, may nagpost that for those who ordered it from B&H, e USD 479 na daw...

also lowest price I've seen being listed is USD 415.....
waaah, samahan nyo na ako sa Quiapo!

    ReplyDelete
  23. yes, ito yung masarap...in fact this was how my friends were able to find lodgings...

GPS ang hihingi-in ko pasalubong from BNK...

    BWAHAHA!

    ReplyDelete
  24. sorry Cath, for my ignorance..i didnt know theres satellite navigation/gps na pala in the phils..thats good to know=)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I remember about GPS being talked about here sa Pinas way back even sa mga 1990s (late 90s or mid-90s)...but its only in the past year or two na nakita ko sya in action...so no worries,

in fact, I was even a bit skeptical before, coz alam mo naman dito sa atin, mag-cha-change ng rules...e yung Colon St, ilang beses na yan naging 1-way, 2-way, 1-way etc...parang I could not imagine a GPS here before as being really up to date to be useful...

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is exactly what I mean re rational road traffic signs in my previous comment.

    ReplyDelete
  27. my point exactly..when we were buying maps for cebu (for Adrian's) the street names and the landmarks were not updated even if the printers had it printed the same year..i thought, are there no editors to maps? can you imagine with GPS when its supposed to change everyday..esp if there are closures of roads and such? im not skeptical, maybe i just dont know how it could work..

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey Cat, check-out Google Maps. In the "Get Direction" mode, key-in Japan (point A - origin) and China (point B - destination). Take note of the directional instructions, particularly No. 43. Have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  29. ah yes, yung swim the ocean or something...hahaha...yeah, nakwento nga ni Ted (an online buddy) in one of his posts...

    kailangan yata Olympic swimmer...hahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  30. agree w/ Chito and Chelo...

hmm....aside from yung sabi ni Doc Philip, kc yata may volunteer group who religiously updates maps...If I find the conversation history of the chat I had w/ my friend, ilagay ko dito anong mention nya..

he plans to join the group...sometimes groups like these are more updated than if you rely on books and maps being sold...nasa internet sila daw and they share yung mga maps na ganon...I would expect them to be better than relying on maps, coz for sure naman, w/ the craziness we have here, people don't have time to print coz streets keep changing..

and not just directions mind you...me, am not happy how some streets and impt buildings' etc. names are changed because may bagong powers that be...

    hmmph.

    ReplyDelete
  31. By the way, here in North America your GPS has to be updated every year because of new roads, new traffic patterns, new businesses, road closures, etc. Depending on brand, it costs around $60 to download from the manufacturer, or buy a new updated memory card for the geographic area you're going to use it in. Sometimes it's better to buy a new GPS - on sale you can get one for under $100.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ok, I found the chat snippet I had w/ my friend = sabi nya

"dito sa PH, may group na naguupdate ng GPS Map
    roadguide.ph ata yun"

so do check the above site out...

    ReplyDelete
  33. expensive for the updated download if that is so...

I asked about it for yung gamit dito sa Pinas, coz yung kilala ko ang bili nya Php 4,500 lang (di nga branded but generic), and I asked if may mga ibang bayad pa like updating it, etc. wala naman daw...you can get it naman w/out something like what you are saying for the USD 60, indeed, e mas ok pa bumili ng bago...

    ReplyDelete
  34. speaking of which, eto, may LX5 na ako...hay..sakit sa bulsa..pero Christmas is a good excuse to make one's self happy :-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yehey Congrats! where did you get it? Hidalgo & how much?
don't worry, its an upgrade long overdue & the images you get from taking pictures will pay off the cost in kind.

    ReplyDelete
  36. btw Doc Philip,

    tamang-tama...patanong po :-)

how does one do panoramic shots dito sa LX-5? parang walang automatic stitching (w/c I use in my GE waterproof cam) or manual stitching eh (w/c am used to in Kodak V803).
kailangan ko ba ng software pa for this? what and where to get it? :-(

ah yes, Hidalgo kanina hehehe...at least na 21K na lang...pero had to pay for the 4GB....wala kasi yong negotiator ko (yung suki nya) kaya even if I asked if pwede i-free nalang nya ang 4GB na memory, di ko na-move from his stance ...

actually, am still ok w/ my Kodak and Fujifilm...kaso nga lang, medyo battered na yata...hahaha...grabeng serbisyo sa akin at 2004 pa yata tong Fuji...whereas Kodak ay parang tumambling na yan sa Pagsanjan at ibang lugar...

    ReplyDelete
  37. oh, and there's a nice, not super expensive waterproof cam from Pentax na ni-recommend don sa binilhan ko ng LX-5...mga 8K lang ata..the impactproof one w/ bigger MP and other features as well as it being impactproof (my dream cam hehe) was worth around 14K...*toink*

but never mind, even if I wanted to, even if I was turned upside down and shaken and wrung like a piece of laundry, wala nang makuha sa akin na pera kc ubos na...

    ReplyDelete
  38. i don't use any software nor use photoshop...di kasi ako marunong...i use widest view & crop the picture...tadah...panoramic na...hehe ang babaw...i wish i knew how to stitch pictures...si Pastor Robbie mahusay sa stitching.

    ReplyDelete
  39. aha..tanong ako kay Pastor Robbie then hehehe...

e spoiled yata ako pala sa panoramic stitching...hmm..bakit kaya wala dito...e yung Kodak and GE meron, parang di kapanipaniwala w/ LX-5 ...

    ReplyDelete

weird to think though, my Kodak V803 was back in 2007 pa tapos may ganon na software...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Congratulations Cat. Looking forward to more beautiful shots from you - including the panoramic shots.
With the gps, you can always ask for directions, or googleing your destination.

    ReplyDelete
  42. *grin* thanks Mar,

eto, naka-question marks lahat dito sa noo ko pano ba tong panoramic shots na to..huhu...

as for the GPS, ang saving grace kc e mas cheap sya kaysa camerang to..hehe...

    ReplyDelete
  43. kanya kanyang stragedy yan...selling points...ang Sony nga may 360 degrees diba...waht the Lumix lacks in other features it makes it up in quality of images...Mahusay ka naman na Indian at may high tech ka na pana...Sapul si Custer! hahahaha ang gulo no!

    ReplyDelete
  44. there are cameras now with built in GPS! O ano pano ka ngayon? a ver a ver!

    ReplyDelete
  45. gusto ko lahat, lahat sa isang camera...LOL

*e sabi di ba..Greed is good...
    let me then edit that..
    digital greed is good

    ReplyDelete
  46. really? what brands and models...

ok yan, para if photographer ka sa gitna ng Amazon jungle and being chased by man-eating crocodiles, you can plot a path out of the jungle...
    hehehe...

    ReplyDelete
  47. but first...the crocodile will have to take a picture of himself eating the photographer para accurate ang photo when its tagged :-)

hmm...I read the two articles above..I suppose ok rin, esp for those who have taken so many pictures parang when you sort it out, you are not sure anymore where it was taken or what it was all about :-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Walang bayad jan? Perhaps from the internet may mga free downloads, pero I don't trust that. Paying $60 for an update from the GPS manufacturer is not a lot of money considering that the data is all of Canada and US including Hawaii. Keep in mind that the Philippines is small in size compared to North America.

When Helen and I rented a car in Europe last September we asked for a GPS option. Without it, getting around would've been extremely difficult, specially at night.

    ReplyDelete
  49. for those in the US and Canada, definitely I'd say go for paying for the update na..after all, 60 dollars to them don't mean the same 60 dollars to folks here or other parts of the world *grin*

honga, gone are the days of map-reading (and folding, unfolding maps and getting irritated)...but I think I am not one of those brave souls who can manage driving a car there just w/ GPS, I would still be too scaredy-cat :-(

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think you made a good choice of choosing your camera over the GPS, Cat. They are both good choices, to begin with.
Things are invented and created to make our lives easier. We've come a long way since the large cumbersome photographic plates, to the much more awesome digital imagery we produce today. These modern inventions as just tools to help us with our passion, the way Michelangelo thought mezzo-fresco paint was the best medium to use on his Sistine Chapel masterpiece.
The same is true with the GPS. I have used it in my car since 2005 and I am happy with the option, but it doesn't solve everything. In my experience, I still have to use intelligence and common sense, the way I approached map-reading.

    ReplyDelete
  51. hmm...I wonder what Michelangelo would be thinking now if he saw all the available material and strides in technology?

nothing is perfect din naman, even a GPS...for one thing, I don't know what happened, but there we were in Subic and wanting to get out and go back to Manila, so they set it...then funnily the GPS said to make a u-turn and gave some other directions...

I was puzzled, because I distinctly remember reading "Manila ->" sign on the road, so we were on the right track as far as I could determine *unless someone was planting some false signs on the road"..

so we went back and followed it, and an official told us we were on the wrong road...ehek!

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's exactly my point. There are times when common sense prevails.
One time, in a rush, I used GPS guide to get to Palm Desert from Oceanside. Normally, I have a route that I take going into Palm Springs. (Palm Desert is city next to Palm Springs.) I expected the gps to give me the same route but to my dismay, it gave me a route passing up through the mountains. It made my trip twice as long. It sure is a direct route from point a to point be, but took longer because of the mountains.

    ReplyDelete
  53. direct eh? that reminds me of that Ted and then Chito posted later -

    1. Go to Google Maps.
    2. Go to "Get Directions".
    3. Type Taiwan as the start location.
    4. Type China as the end location.
    5. Read STEP 24 of the directions....
    6. IF YOU Laugh, REPOST

    ReplyDelete
  54. Google suggests KAYAKING as mode of transportation from Japan to California via Hawaii and Washington.

    ReplyDelete
  55. ay step 23 na sya...so yung KAYAKING is step 23.a

    mwahaha!

  56. He'd be using all available materials and advancement in modern technology for his work. In photography, he'd be using a Leica M9 and a Hasselblad.

    ReplyDelete
  57. makikita natin dito anong preference mo :-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. If money is no object, yan ang mga preference ko, Leica M9 and a Hasselblad with a digital back. Pareho ata kami ni Brah Ko Joey.

    ReplyDelete
  59. magkasundo talaga kayo ni Joey on this...great minds think alike..and ....great purses can afford it..hahaha..joke lang..oo nabasa ko na sabi mo nga if money is no object...anyway malay natin baka if Joey hits the mother of all lottos and jackpots...e magbigay pa yan ng tig-isa-isa sa atin ng Leica M-9...ehem...ehem..ehem..(magdilang anghel sana ano?)

  60. A friend advised me once about not spending an arm and a leg on a camera, but rather invest on a better lense/lenses.
I realize how true that advise is.

    ReplyDelete
  61. yeah...really can be seen between cams w/c have functions and features but not the best lenses..versus those w/c may have limited functions but have very good lens...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Absolutely! The camera lens is the KEY to a sharper, distortion free photograph. Cat's new Lumix has a Leica lens and Leica lenses are the best.
